“Everything’s An Essay…”

… thus spoke Joan Didion, one of my favorite writers, and in doing so, crystalized with her inimitable, succinct words, my feelings about writing. In Everything's an Essay, I hope to find meaning in the quotidian. To notice, digest, and make some sense of the world around me. Writing students often tell me that they don't know what to write about. I say, just open your eyes and look around. In reflecting on even those moments or observations that might seem insignificant, I open up a seam through which molten ore often pours. Or maybe weeds just strain their determined heads toward the sun. Either way, everything's an essay.
